Adding Items (Flex Editor)

Adding Items (Flex Editor)

Applies to: Flex Editor

In the Flex Editor, an activity is built from items: discrete pieces of content and questions that Classwork scores for you. Unlike the Slide Editor, where you draw answer boxes on top of a document, Flex items are their own objects and resize to fit any screen. You add everything through one button: + Add.

Click + Add (in the item rail or the top toolbar) to open Add item(s) to this Activity. From here you can add items three ways.

1. Build an Item Yourself

On the Add Item tab, pick from three columns:

  • Content: Text, Image, Audio, Video.
  • Items: Multiple Choice, Multiple Select, Short Answer, Open Answer, Fill in the Blank, Inline Choice, True/False, Match Table Grid, Hot Text, and Part A / Part B.
  • Math: Numeric, Algebra Expression, Graphing, Number Line, Bar Graph.

Item types that are greyed out (for example Drag and Drop, Matching List, and Hotspot) are coming soon.

2. Generate Items with AI

You do not have to author everything by hand. Use Create with AI to generate passages and questions, or AI Convert Document to turn a document into items. Classwork writes the items and sets the answer keys for you to review. See Use AI to Generate Content.

3. Add from an Item Bank

Pull ready-made, standards-aligned questions from an Item Bank instead of writing your own. Texas organizations with the matching Companion see the OER Math Item Bank and OER RLA Item Bank tabs. See Item Banks.

The Add Document as Content tab is a fourth path: it brings a PDF or text in as reference material to display beside your items (not a surface to draw on).

Build and Edit an Item

Select any item to edit it: enter the prompt and answer options, set the point value, and use Edit for its full options. Duplicate or delete an item from its quick controls. You can also tag each item with a Standard, a Bloom’s level, and a Webb’s DOK level, by hand or with the item’s AI (sparkle) button.

Group Items and Preview

Group a stimulus (a passage, image, or map) with its questions so they stay together. Grouped items show side by side in Split Screen, with the stimulus pinned while students answer. Click Preview at any time to see the activity as a student before you assign it. For the full walkthrough, see the Flex Editor Overview.

What’s Next?

You have built your activity. Next, assign it to your students: Assign to Your Students.
