How Do I Use the Graph - Plotting Tool? |
Graphing Tool
Classwork’s Graphing question type allows students to plot points or draw lines on a coordinate plane. You control the plane size, required points or lines, and scoring. All responses are auto-graded for you.
Create a Graphing Question
To create a question from scratch:
- In the Tool Box, click Math.
- Select Graphing.
Your cursor will turn into crosshairs. Click once to place the question, or click and drag to set the size.
The Edit Graphing window will open.

Choose Points or Lines
Select Points if students will plot specific coordinates, or choose Lines if students will draw lines.
Set the point value for the question. Students must correctly plot all required points or lines to receive full credit. Partial credit is not automatically calculated, but you may adjust scores during review.
Set the Size of the Coordinate Plane
Adjust the X-axis and Y-axis minimum and maximum values to define the visible grid range.
Axis labels display between the minimum and maximum values. For example, if the maximum is set to 5, labels will display for 1 through 4.
Add Points
If you selected Points:
- Enter the x- and y-coordinates.
- Click Add Point.
- Repeat for additional points.

Points will be labeled automatically starting with “A.” Students will not see the answer points while completing the Assignment.
To remove a point, click the trash icon next to its value.
Add Lines
If you selected Lines, choose how you want to define each line.
Using Slope-Intercept Form (y = mx + b)
- Select Constants.
- Enter the slope (m) and y-intercept (b).
- Click Add Line.

Using Two Points
- Select With Points.
- Enter the x- and y-values for two points.
- The line will be drawn through those points.

To remove a line, click the trash icon next to its definition.
What Students See
Students answer by clicking directly on the coordinate plane.
- For points, each click places a point.
- For lines, students click two points to define the line.
- Additional clicks are required if multiple points or lines must be drawn.
Students cannot delete a point once placed, but they can drag it to reposition it.
Power User Tips
Make the Plane Square: Hold the Shift key while resizing to maintain a perfect square.
Display Only Quadrant I: Set both minimum axis values to -1 to show only Quadrant I while keeping the origin visible.
Add a Question Prompt: Use Teacher Text from the Insert menu to add instructions above the graph.
