Canvas: How to Assign Student Work Using Canvas

Before creating assignments in Canvas, you will need to install Classwork.com as an External Tool or "App" in your Canvas site. See “How Do I Install Classwork.com as an App in Canvas?" You will need to do that for each course with which you'll include Classwork.com assignments. You can skip that step if your organization has installed it in Canvas for you.

Special Note July 2025: The app's URL has changed from app.teachermade.com to app.classwork.com. If your course still has app.teachermade.com links in it, and you want to add app.classwork.com links, leave the TeacherMade tool installed and ALSO install the tool as Classwork.com following the directions in that article. Canvas needs to know about both URLs.

Create the Classwork.com Assignment

Start in Classwork.com. Click the activity you're interested in, then click "New Assignment" to begin creating an assignment. Select "Canvas" as the Delivery Method, and continue to set the remaining assignment options as you wish.

After you create the assignment, click the "Copy" button next to the assignment link to copy the link into your computer's "copy-paste" memory.

Create the Canvas Assignment

Switch over to your Canvas course and click on “Assignments” in the left menu.

Click “+ Assignment” in the upper right to add a new assignment.

Enter the fields required to set up a Canvas assignment just as you normally would.

  • For “Submission Type,” choose “External Tool” in the drop-down.
  • Paste the Classwork.com link in the field labeled “Enter or Find an External Tool URL.”
  • WARNING: DO NOT CLICK “FIND” as doing so will cause Canvas to strip off the important parts of the link. If you later see just the main Classwork.com screen instead of the specific assignment, it was because you clicked Find. Just edit the assignment and paste the full link into the URL field..

When you’re done entering your assignment settings, click “Save & Publish.”

Be sure to add a score to the assignment in Canvas. When a student completes work, Classwork.com will pass back a percentage which Canvas multiplies by the assignment to arrive at the final score for the assignment. If you leave the score 0, you will see 0 in your gradebook.

You Did It!

Woohoo! You’ve created a Classwork.com assignment in your Canvas course! Students will be able to launch the assignment from directly within Canvas. You can also use SpeedGrader to grade any submissions. It’s a good day.

Submissions:
Student results will appear below once the students begin the assignment.
