It sounds like you’ve inserted a Short Answer text box when you actually need an Open Answer box.

The Short Answer question type is designed for one- or two-word responses, not full sentences or paragraphs. It will only display the text that physically fits within the box.

You can check whether your Short Answer box is appropriately sized by entering the correct answer on the Edit Short Answer tab. The system will display that text inside the box, showing how much fits. You can also use Preview mode to see how it appears to students. Resize the box if needed.

If you want students to type longer responses—such as full sentences or paragraphs—use the Open Answer tool (represented by the “P” icon).

This response field allows students to type as much as they need. If their text extends beyond the visible area, the box automatically becomes scrollable so you can view their entire response.
